Sometimes called Holland, The Netherlands is one of three Northern European countries that constitute the “Benelux” region Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxemburg. The colloquial Holland actually comes from two of the country’s provinces, North and South Holland, which contain most of the nation’s major cities including Amsterdam. While the distinction is unimportant to most Amsterdammers, provincials tend to prefer the more accurate and inclusive The Netherlands.
